形态与组分 核酸为DNA，分子量85000000～110000000，在粒子中有2～4种形式。

生物学特性 该亚科内的各种病毒宿主范围变化较大，从非常广到非常窄都有。用细胞培养时常引起细胞发生病理变化。复制过程短于24小时。

分类 该亚科属于疱疹病毒科(Herpesviridae)，其又分2个属：人疱疹病毒属1[Human(alpha)herpesvirus 1]和猪疱疹病毒属1[Suid(alpha)herpesvirus 1]，还包括Cercopithecid herpesvirus 1(B)，Equid herpesvirus 3(Coital exanthema)，Felid herpesvirus 1(feline herpesvirus)，Equid herpesvirus 2(slow growing equine herpesvirus)Canid herpesvirus 1(Canine herpesvirus)。
