畜妻养子

畜：畜养。养活妻子儿女。指维持一家的生活。战国时，齐宣王向孟子请教如何施行仁政。孟子说：“施行仁政的关键是要保护人民，使他们有固定的产业。有了固定的产业，百姓上能奉养父母，下能畜妻养子，丰收得饱暖，荒年饿不死，自然不会去做坏事，社会也就可以安定了。”齐宣王听后大加赞赏。(见《孟子·梁惠王上》)

畜妻养子xù qī yǎng zǐ

support one’s wife and children
❍ 是故明君制民之产，必使仰足以事父母，俯足以～，乐岁终身饱，凶年免于死亡。(《孟子·梁惠王上》)Therefore an intelligent ruler will regulate the livelihood of the people,so as to make sure that,above,they shall have sufficient wherewith to serve their parents,and,below,sufficient wherewith to support their wives and children; that in good years they shall always be abundantly satisfied,and that in bad years they shall escape the danger of perishing.

畜妻养子xù qī yǎng zǐ

旧指担负和维持妻子、儿女的生活。《孟子·梁惠王上》：“必使仰足以事父母，俯足以畜妻子。”
